Project  ‘LITTLE LIGHTBOX’

My entry into animation had never been children’s cartoons. Instead, it was born out of a drive to communicate certain ideas which I felt was difficult to express with a still image. That doesn’t mean that I do not like children’s cartoons but my background in the fine arts and illustration and my interest in films and foray into other forms of art have helped me embrace a broad spectrum of creative animation and video/film works.

As an independent animation film maker, I understand the need for a space for risk-taking storytellers to present their works. Film festivals are the usual route independent film makers go by, but what if the films are little short  odd bits of works that don’t fit into any of the festivals’ categories or context? Or if the film makers would like to give their good old films another airing but can’t get a place in any film festivals’  Retrospective Screenings’?

I hope that, with Project Little Lightbox, i can help find some spaces for fellow film makers to share their works with the public.

If you would like to put in your work for any possible screenings, please contact email me: anividfilm@gmail.com

‘Basement Films @ B1’  is me working with Esplanade Visual Arts department to provide a screening space for independent artists, aspiring film makers and animators to show their work outside of a Film Festival or a film theatre context so as to present their works more viewers.

Esplanade is an exiciting cultural hub in cosmopolitan Singapore which attracts artists from around the world. The diverse cultural scene in this country provides a fairly broad-based audience.

Here’s Esplanade’s visual arts mission:

Esplanade-

Importing the transient nature of the performing arts to the exhibiting of visual arts, Esplanade's visual arts presentations generate a sense of dynamism through a constant change of exhibitions, located in the unusual spaces offered by Esplanade's unique architecture, and centered on four themes a year. Featuring international and regional artists, the presentations' focus on contemporary local and Asian artistic expressions gives a visual dimension to the centre's performing arts events and festivals.

The Singapore Art Museum has a festival called the Art Garden: Children’s Season. It has been running since 2010 and they are going into the 4th edition this year. The Art Garden is a contemporary art exhibition for the young and the young and hearts, curated for young viewers starting from age 2 and it has been well received. This new edition of Art Garden will be running from 7th May 2013 to the beginning of February 2014 and will be situated in SAM @ 8Q.

The short film screenings will be part of the Art Garden exhibition and will be held in the Moving Image Gallery (MIG) located on the 2nd level of 8Q. The films will be playing on loop during the opening hours of the museum’s Art Garden exhibition.

The Moving Image Gallery is a very good cinema with frequent screenings of films from Singapore and other countries. It is also where the South East Asian Film Festival is held.

If you have made any short film or animation film suitable for children, this is a very good exposure and a very nice place for screening.
